Babajis Kerala Kitchen

The Best South Indian Restaurant in Melbourne - Babaji's Kerala Kitchen

Bringing our communities together with homely South Indian cooking
&
 a warm Aussie country welcome.

Melbourne's best South Indian restaurant

How is Babaji's Kerala Kitchen different to other Indian restaurants?

Most Indian restaurants in Australia specialise in North Indian cuisine. Instead we invite you to try South Indian cuisine, specifically that from our home state of Kerala, at the very bottom of South West India.

Like other Indian states, we have our own unique culture and a very distinct cuisine.

'Kerala' translates to the 'land of the coconuts', it's also where many of the world's spices are grown.

Our menu - expect lighter dishes perfect for an Australian summer with an emphasis on coconut, mustard seeds & curry leaves.

Give us lentils and we'll turn it into more than a daal - from crispy dosas to steamed idli ricecakes - this is healthy, wholesome, comforting goodness - cooked with love.

Does Babaji's Kerala Kitchen have butter chicken on the menu?

Of course we do! Though butter chicken is not a South Indian dish, we make the Yarra Valley's best butter chicken!

Is Babaji's Kerala Kitchen a kid friendly restaurant?

We sure are! As well as having a seperate kid's menu, we welcome kids with activities to keep them entertained.

Is Babaji's Kerala Kitchen a good restaurant for vegans?

Most definitely! South Indian food relies heavily on coconut and lentils and not cream and butter.

More than half of our menu is vegan friendly. We have a seperate vegan menu to help you out.

Is Babaji's Kerala Kitchen a good restaurant for coeliacs and those that are gluten free?

Most definitely! Our menu's reliance on lentils and not wheat, means that 80% of our menu is gluten free and coeliac safe. We follow strict food safety procedures to make sure there is no cross contamination as well as training our staff in allergen awareness. Make sure to ask for our seperate gluten free menu.

Does Babaji's Kerala Kitchen serve meat?

The state of Kerala is made up of roughly 30% Christians, 30% Muslims and 30% Hindus - this means that meat is important in our culture.

Whilst we're known for our fresh fish dishes, our most loved dish is Kerala beef curry served with freshly made Malabar Parotta. It's as popular as a Aussie parma at the pub!

Is Babaji's Kerala Kitchen a halal restaurant?

The meat served at Babaji's Kerala Kitchen is Halal (please request to sight our supplier's halal certificate).

There is no pork on site at either of Babaji's Kerala Kitchen's two South Indian restaurants.

Is Babaji's Kerala Kitchen a dog friendly restaurant?

For sure! (as long as we get pats). Both our two restaurants have outside dog friendly dining and we even have free raw bones in the fridge as a special treat.  Head here to see our favourite doggy friendly walks in the Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges.

Does Babaji's Kerala Kitchen offer catering for weddings & parties?

Absolutely! Babajis began our journey in 2014 as a food truck cooking at festivals, markets and weddings across Victoria. Nothing makes us happier. Find out more here.

HOW DOES BABAJI'S KERALA KITCHEN SUPPORT COMMUNITY?

WHY IS HELPING COMMUNITY IMPORTANT TO BABAJIS?

Babaji's Kerala Kitchen started in 2014 when Max, from Kerala, South India started his Australian life with Billy, his wife, from Melbourne's Dandenong Ranges.

Like the story of many immigrants starting afresh - it wasn't an easy journey.  Starting from the bottom again and experiencing exploitation in the hospitality industry, having little family support and very little savings to help them escape a future life without struggle - two special humans from the Dandenong Ranges, saw their determination to succeed ... and also that Billy & Max could not achieve their dreams without a helping hand.

Babaji's will be forever grateful for these two, who had come from humble immigrant beginnings themselves. They supported Billy & Max with a small loan to start the Babaji's market stall and then later another small loan to get the doors of Babaji's Kerala Kitchen, Belgrave's first restaurant open.

Without these two - Babaji's Kerala Kitchen would not exist.

Today - we still ask ourselves;

Why would these two help like they did?

For we weren't family and didn't know each other that well.

And ultimately it comes down to them being 'just good humans'.

If Babajis can emanate that philosophy, even just a tiny bit ... then we are honouring our past and those who believed (and still believe) in us.

HOW DOES BABAJI'S KERALA KITCHEN SUPPORT COMMUNITY?

Every month from February - December, Babaji's Kerala Kitchen hosts fundraising 'community days'.

On these days, Babajis donates 10% of all of our turnover to a local community group.

It's our way of honouring our past and paying it forward.

It's our way of thanking our local community for the support they have given us.

WHO HAVE BABAJI'S COMMUNITY DAYS HELPED?

Over the years we've helped preschools build playgrounds, the local scouts send their members to camps, and local artists rebuild their community studio after an arson attack.

In 2025 we raised funds for:

$450 - Gladysdale Primary School to help them establish a school kitchen.

$350 - Belgrave Lantern Parade to help pay for traffic control.

$370 - Selby Community House to help upgrade their outdated phone system.

$400 - Upper Yarra Garden Club to to help with marketing their events.

$330 - Body of Wellbeing to help support body positivity events in our community.

$300 - Sherbrooke Little Athletics Club to  buy some new First Aid Kits.

$330 - Wesburn & District Dog Obedience Club to help pay for dog trainer training.

$400 - Mountain District Radio (3MDR) to help keep the show on the road.

$350 - Upper Yarra SES to go towards helping them buy a new truck.

$350 - Millwarra Primary School to help with their kitchen garden.

HOW ELSE DOES BABAJI'S KERALA KITCHEN HELP COMMUNITY?

In 2026 many of us in our community, feel stretched ... for some of us, every $ counts and a Babajis treat isn't an option.

That's why, we operate an informal 'pay it forward program'.

Hungry and need a feed?  Drop in and let our team know, and you'll always be looked after.

We also regularly cook for our local food bank 'Community Casseroles' and have donated over 1000 meals.

(You can find out more about Community Casseroles, or request a meal if you live in the Dandenong Ranges here.)

You can help us to support those in our community struggling by donating to our 'pay it forward' fund, either at our restaurants or when ordering take away online (see top item on menu).

We thank you for your support in helping us to make this happen.
